The International Association of Law Schools held its 2019 Global Law Deans’ Forum and 2019 Annual Meeting this year at University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Law and Administration, Gdańsk, Poland. We thoroughly enjoyed the intellectual exchange that took place among our colleagues from all geographic regions. Our deepest gratitude and appreciation to the University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Law and Administration for hosting. SUMMARY: GENERAL INFORMATION The Global Law Deans’ Forum will take place at the University of Gdańsk, Faculty of Law and Administration in Gdańsk, Poland. The forum is open to both Member and Non-Member (active and emeritus) Deans, Vice Deans, Associate Deans, and law school leaders from law schools and departments. The forum begins with a welcome dinner on Wednesday, September 18, followed by a full meeting day on Thursday, September 19, and a final half meeting day on Friday, September 20.
THEME The theme for 2019 is The Role of Law and the Rule of Law – Rethinking Legal Education, and is a continuation of the discussion’s from the 2019 Regional Law Deans’ Fora. We are eager to explore this theme and to continue exchanging ideas that will advance legal education. These workshops serve to distill and focus regional perspectives on legal education. This is an opportunity for you to engage with law school leaders to develop a critical set of issues and proposals in developing a global approach to the challenges facing legal education today. We will concentrate on three areas: 1) Setting and Implementing Standards, 2) Teaching Challenging, Controversial and/or Sensitive Subject Matter within the framework of rational legal discourse, and 3) Administrative Challenges for Law School Leadership in a rapidly evolving educational dynamic.
DETAILS: PROGRAM The full program will be emailed to registered attendees one month before the conference. The forum begins with a welcome dinner on Wednesday, September 18, followed by a full meeting day on Thursday, September 19, and a final half meeting day on Friday, September 20. Upon registration, all attendees will be requested to submit a short biography and profile picture which will be included in the program.  This personal information will also be used for the badges. All attendees must pick up their badges onsite at the check in area and are requested to wear for the duration of the conference. Please make sure to review your information for accuracy, as your title, full name, institution and country will be listed on the badge and program.
REGISTRATION FEES There is a Member Fee and Non-Member Fee. The registration fee includes access to all sessions, breaks and dinners. In order for you to be eligible for the Member Fee, your institution must already be a member of the IALS in good standing for 2019. You will be asked to select your institution from a drop down menu at the time of registration. If your institution is not listed, you will automatically be charged the non-member fee. If you plan to attend you will need to register separately for this meeting. Upon registration of the Global Law Deans’ Forum you will be provided a discount code to receive USD $295.00 off your registration fee for the Annual Meeting! In keeping with our current policy, a guest is considered to be a spouse, significant other, child, family member, or friend whose occupation is unrelated to the legal education industry. Guests are welcome to attend all scheduled meals during the meeting. All prices are listed in U.S. dollars. Only payments by credit card will be accepted online. ACCOMMODATIONS AND TRANSPORTATION Each registered attendee is responsible for making their own hotel accommodations and transportation to Gdansk, Poland. Our host has arranged special rates at three local hotels. Further information regarding hotel and transportation will be provided after registration. UG has negotiated discounted rates at three hotels from September 17 through the 23, 2019. Once you complete the registration, you will receive a confirmation email for hotel bookings. UG will provide morning and afternoon shuttles to and from the hotels and their campus.
VISA REQUIREMENTS Visa invitation letters will also be emailed separately after registration. Please include your passport information during the registration process to receive a letter. Poland is part of the Schengen Area, a zone without controls on internal borders which comprises of 28 countries. Third-country nationals may enter Poland if they are in possession of a valid travel document and a visa (if required). A list of countries whose citizens may enter Poland without a visa is available here: https://www.msz.gov.pl/en/travel_to_poland/entering_poland/visa_free/. Also, holders of a Schengen C-type visa, if visa is valid for Schengen countries, may travel visa-free within the Schengen area. The holders of a residence permit or national D-type visa issued by one of the Schengen States may travel visa-free for a period not exceeding 3 months during the half-year period. Please visit the local consulates of Poland in your country to check for your country’s requirements for travelling to Poland. Obtaining a visa may take time. The application should be examined no later than 15 calendar days after the date of submission of the full set of documents. SUBSIDY Limited funding is available for participants from developing countries that are current members. In the event that a participant or his/her institution is unable to provide the full amount for transportation and/or accommodations, funding is available to partner with the participant or his/her institution to share part of that expense. The Committee will review the applications and make the final decision. Preference for such stipends are first afforded to members of IALS, prior requests from previous meetings, and determined on the basis of maintaining diversity of participation at the meeting.
