Criminal Justice in China: Comparative Perspectives

The Centre for Rights and Justice at the Faculty of Law of the Chinese University of Hong Kong is pleased to announce a conference entitled “Criminal Justice in China: Comparative Perspectives” in Hong Kong from 6th to 8th of May 2011. The conference draws participants from across the world, including Mainland China, to discuss this timely and important topic.

The conference will provide an opportunity to mark the publication of our Dean Mike McConville’s book, Criminal Justice in China: An Empirical Inquiry (Elgar Publishing: April 2011), the first English-language book based on a sustained and comprehensive empirical research project on the criminal justice process in China to appear in several decades.

The Conference will cover the following themes and topics:

  • Parallel systems for punishment and detention
  • The investigation of crime
  • The prosecution process
  • Access to justice and criminal defence
  • The trial process
  • The role of the public and the media
  • Access to justice and petitioning in criminal justice contexts
